The tests are about 99.9% accurate when taken at the proper time. The window period for most people is at about the 3 month mark; it is very rare for someone to need 6 months to test positive if they have contracted HIV. Testing before 3 months may give you the correct result, but most professionals will tell you that if you can wait for the 3 months you should do so. Most people who eventually test positive don’t actually report having symptoms. Symptoms of HIV are similar to symptoms of anything that could activate your immune system; this is why they are referred to as “flu-like” symptoms. They resemble other health issues. At 2.5 months, you’re probably going to get the correct result, but for peace of mind, you should probably just wait it out; a lot of people start second guessing the test when they take it earlier than is recomended.
