What will a compass read if placed exactly on the north pole?

If you put your compass on the geographic north pole (earth’s rotational axis) then it will point south to the earth’s magnetic pole located in northern Canada. Every direction from the geographic north pole is south. The exact location of the magnetic pole wanders, and the rate of wandering is accelerating, leading some geophysicists to speculate that we are getting close to a reversal. A compass on the magnetic pole (I’ve been there) won’t spin, it will just rest wherever the needle happens to be as there is no magnetic force to orient the needle with the earth’s magnetic field.

If it is at the magnetic North Pole, it will spin like a top. If it is at the geographical north poll, it will point towards the magnetic north poll.

robert D is correct a compass always points to magnetic north, which is not the same as the north pole the current magnetic north is to the south west of true north.

South West, if I recall. Magnetic North Pole is not currently at the North Pole.
