In the seven years that Software Development has been tracking salaries, one thing has remained clear: Experienced software developers and technical managers are a valuable asset, and most organizations reward them accordingly. That said, the past few surveys have revealed signs of a gradual slowdown in compensation as developers wait out the longest labor market slump since World War II. While an estimated 2.3 million U.S. jobs in every sector have vanished since the beginning of the 2001 recession, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics payroll survey, the 2004 survey of employed developers indicated an understandable desire to stay put. After two years of stagnation at $77,000, staff salaries showed a glimmer of growth last year, to just under $80,000. Will 2005’s survey reveal that the economy’s rebounded?
