What were the treatment of the Russian peasants when the Czars ruled them?
Big question! There were five classes of peasents when serfdom existed- Serfs- owned by nobles. How they were treated depended upon how nice the nobles were. Some of them were treated little better than slaves. But often they were better treated than serfs in other parts of Europe. Court serfs- They were owned by the Czars. They were in the same situation as other serfs. They were often given away as presents to nobles. Church-owned serfs- This class was abolished in the reign of Catherine the Great. They were generally treated badly by the bishops and monks who owned them. State peasents- They were owned by the state. They were not free to do as they pleased. But they were often materially better off than free peasents. Free peasents- free, but mostly very poor. Serfodm was abolished by Alexander II in the middle of the 19th century. However, many of the peasents were disappointed that they had to pay off the nobles for their land. Until the middle of the 19th century, peasents were i
