What were the successes and failures of the roman republic?

0

Successes – successfully united Rome against external enemies and expanded territory, eventually becoming the dominant political entity of the Mediterranean. Set the example for an effective and balanced representative government. Failures – Late in the republic factions rose to dominance, much of it surrounding class warfare. Also citizenship was strictly for the citizens of Rome the city, the rest of the territories were denied it, causing discontent. The power of the army became dangerously great. The partisanship got so bad that the gov was unable to deal with the problems of the time and lost the respect of the citizens, making it ripe for takeover by ambitious generals (Julius and later Augustus). The great failure of the republic was its inability to prevent its own demise.
