What were the successes and failures of presidential reconstruction?
There were no successes except for the Freedman’s Bureau that attempted to help as many es-slaves as possible. The 13th 14th 15th amendments were passed, but most of the freedoms given the ex-slaved were blocked. The radical republicans wanted to punish the southerners for the war, and the southerners wanted to punish the ex-slaves for being freed. President Johnson was trapped into a veto by the radical republicans and impeached. He was one vote short of being removed from office. Following that trial mhe was ineffective totally.
