During the Republic, there were no permanent rulers. The two chief executives were called Consuls. It would have been a lot like having two presidents or two prime ministers. In emergencies, The Romans appointed something called a Dictator, who was given absolute authority to lead Rome through the crisis, and their term only lasted a single year The Republic lasted from 510 B.C until 27 B.C. In 27 B.C Caesar Augustus achieved absolute authority, but never used the term “king”. He used the term “Princep”, which is Latin for “first citizen”, but we call him the first Emperor for the sake of ease. The Roman Empire lasted from 27
