There was a ridiculous hierarchy where they were a lot better off than the blacks who were treated appallingly and had to have travel permits just to move around. But they didn’t have the same rights as whites. They couldn’t go to white beaches or white cinemas and all that kind of stuff. Mixed marriages were highly illegal. You married within your own race or you didn’t get married, that was the law. Can you tell me about your next project Despite the Falling Snow? It’s kind of a tragic love story. I’m polishing the screenplay on that and it will have a larger budget. It’s a bit more epic, more Dr Zhivago-esque. It’s a story of passion and betrayal with strong female leads set in post-Stalinist Russia. The lead character’s parents were taken by Stalin and she falls in love with a very dashing young guy who’s working for Khruschev’s government. He believes in it, he’s very idealistic and she on the other side is working secretly for the Americans against the Russian government. So he’s
