According to these results, estrogen used in combination with progestin increases the risk of both heart disease and breast cancer, strokes and blood clots. The Women’s Health Initiative concluded definitively that hormone replacement therapy places women at a significantly elevated risk for breast cancer. The study found a 26 percent increase in breast cancer risk for women taking hormone replacement therapy.
