What were the original teams of the NHL?
When the NHL was formed in 1917, it consisted of the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs, and Toronto Arenas, all of the National Hockey Association. More teams were added until the 1930s. The financially difficult times of the 1930s managed to wipe out all but six teams. These were Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, Detroit Red Wings, Boston Bruins, Chicago Blackhawks, and New York Rangers. They are known as the “Original Six”.
