What were the original boundaries of the burial ground?
No one presently knows the exact boundaries of the African Burial Ground. The 14,000 square foot, African Burial Ground or “Broadway” site that was recently excavated is only a small portion of the entire gravesite. It is believed that the northern boundary was Duane Street, and to the west the ancient Native American trail and legendary street Broadway. Over the eighteenth century the Burial Ground certainly expanded, as it was used for possibly over a century. The African Burial Ground eventually covered more than five acres, or more than five complete city blocks.
