It depends which ‘olden days’ you mean. Employment prospects for women have been variable throughout history. for much of history, most people didn’t really have ‘jobs’ as we understand them today. Most people lived by farming, and running a farm was a two-person job. The farmer’s wife contributed economically by raising the poultry, milking the cows, making butter and cheese, brewing ale, and selling her surplus produce. She looked after livestock, gardened, and helped in the fields when needed, as at harvest time etc. The rigid divide between ‘home’ and ‘work’ that we think of as normal today didn’t really exist. A lot of single women worked as servants until they married, being in service was considered to be a good way to save for marriage and to learn useful household skills.
