What were the Norths and Souths views on slavery and the Civil War?
The root of the issue is based on economics. The North moved away from slavery as their economy did not need slavery to develop. The South did. Second, the Northern slave traders grew rich on selling slaves to the South in the 17th and 18th centuries, only to have Northeners grow angry about it in the 19th. The South defended slavery because they had no alternative. Southern plantation owners had a great deal of capital tied up in their slaves, they did not have the resources to bring in immigrant workers as the industrial North was doing. Slavery was a vital component in the agrarian based economy that had developed in the South. Wrong or not, the South had no choice in its present makeup. Now the reason for the Civil War is linked to economics as well. Slavery was a secondary reason, the main reason was the Southern view that states had the right to reject federal decisions that were detrimental to a state. north is against slavery. The North has come around to the idea that all men should be free and want to free the slaves, although they still won’t invite them to dinner or allow them to vote. Although the North wants slavery to end they still don’t consider black to have the same rights and the work force of the North isn’t based on slavery so it wouldn’t effect them much. The South is for slavery and thinks nothing is wrong with that. On top of that southern plantation owners have made their money with the blood and sweat of slaves working their giant plantations. If slavery is abolished and they would now have to pay the slaves to do their job (even a little), then they would be broke in a very short time. This exactly what happened and why you see moldy, run down, plantation houses that the forests and swamps have taken back.
