What were the mistakes and strategies of the Battle of the Somme in World War One?
According to my husband, whose father was injured at the Battle of the Somme, the Germans were hidden and well protected in underground bunkers. The British bombarded their trenches with massive amounts of gunfire, when they received no return fire their Generals told them to advance (while they stayed away at a safe distance). Once the soldiers were through the coils of barbed wire, with no hope of turning back, the Germans opened fire and shot them like ducks in a barrel. So many British soldiers were killed that after cease fire, armistice, there were so few young men around that many bereaved fiancees and young widows remained single for the rest of their lives. Good luck. God bless. Gladgran.
