What were the mental health symptoms that presented in the Andrea Yates case?
Every pregnancy for Andrea Yates brought about more mental health problems. It’s clear that there were three steps in her metamorphosis: an oppressive marriage, repeated childbirths and mismanagement of mental illness. Repeated childbirths further weakened Yates physically and mentally, and her family history suggests a predisposition to certain mental disorders. Abrupt changes in her medications in the weeks and days prior to the killings may have been the final trigger. Yates became convinced that Satan was within her; she deserved execution, but her children could still go to heaven if sent while they were still innocent. Andrea Yates killed her five children in 2001, after she tried to commit suicide twice. Her husband was unknowing of her issues and thought they were a happy family.
