What were the main ranks within the Roman Army?
Broken down, the army was divided into Legions. Each Legion had roughly around 6000 men. The Legion was then divided by ten into Cohorts, and each Cohort had around 600 men. These 600 Maniples were then divided into three lots of two hundred soldiers and from there into a Century. A Century originally had 100 men, because Century means one hundred, although in later years, this number dropped to around 80 men per Century. The Century was usually a mixture of Legionaires and Auxiliaries. Legionaires were Roman citizens but common soldiers. Auxiliaries, were usually men taken into the army from an area that the Roman’s had conquered. They fought alongside other men from their own nation but were placed well away from their homeland to fight. This of course was to stop any chance of a rebellion or uprising.
