What were the main differences between Luther and Zwingli?
Zwingli was Swiss; his movement was more local and came a little after Luther…In a nutshell, Luther kept more Catholic traditions, sacraments, forms of worship, etc. than Zwingli did. Notably, Zwingli rejected the idea that Communion, or Eucharist, was anything more than a symbol. Zwingli also believed that men and women had to do something to “earn” salvation–Luther thought that it was a gift from God that could not be “deserved” by anyone… The most noticeable difference was in worship–Zwingli believed churches should be whitewashed, and simple–he disliked music and ceremony in worship; Luther thought these things were fine. Why were countries’ leaders so adamant about ONE single religion? Why were the Dutch able to have many different religions within the Dutch republic but no one else could have more than one religion without there being problems? In general, states in this period tended to strictly control religion, and to in various ways force or encourage people to follow
