What were the levels of dioxins and PCBs in the infant formulae samples?
Although dioxins and PCBs were detected in all of the samples analysed, concentrations were generally very low and have fallen. Slightly higher levels were found in two products sampled in 1998, but this was not the case when the product was re-sampled in 2001. The levels found are equivalent to less than one part per trillion (1,000,000,000,000). Dioxins and PCBs have no immediate effect on health, even at the highest levels found in foods. The potential risks to health come from long-term exposure to high levels.
