What were the intellectual causes of the french revolution?
Enlightened thinkers called “philosophes”. They called for freedom of expression in an atmosphere of censorship. They aggressively pursued a secular view of life since their focus was not on an afterlife, but on this world and how it could be improved and enjoyed. These ideas were greatly influenced by the scientific revolution of the 18th century. Enlightened thinking also had an influence on the American Revolution.
