The Romans used the cross for a tortuous death. The Jews would have stoned Jesus. For 2 weeks out of the year, Pontius Pilate was in Jerusalem. It was during those 2 weeks that Jesus was arrested and crucified. If Jesus had been arrested any other week, He would have been stoned to death.
