What were the goals of the American Federation of Labors?
In 1866, a union organized that was composed of several associations of skilled workers. This union came to be called the American Federation of Labor and grew and held many successful strikes under the leadership of Samuel Gompers. The goal’s of the AFL were what are called, “bread and butter” issues. Namely, decent wages, safe working conditions, limited hours of work per day and number of days per week, the right to negotiate with management, the right to strike, and freedom to engage in political activities.
