What were the freedom rides ( IN Australia) and how did they contribute to the struggle for aboriginal rights?
The Freedom Rides were journeys through rural northern NSW by aborginal activists and university students that aim at exposing racism in Australia during 1965. They were led by Charles Perkins, the first aboriginal man to finish a tertiary course. They went around in a bus. The white students who participated were supporters of communism. The rides contributed by exposing racism in Australian towns towards aboriginals, it exposed the racism to the white Australian public who was largely unaware of the problem. There was one incident on the rides where the aboriginal activists tried to get into a public pool, but they were refused entry because they were black. Charles Perkins then said to the crowd of white men, some oh whom he recognised to “tell your mrs what you’re doin’ with our women”.
