What were the dimensions of the invasion stripes carried by RAF aircraft on D-Day?
Black and white stripes were painted prominently on many British and American aircraft just before D-Day (6 June 1944) to make them easier to recognise as “friendly”. These stripes (three white and two black) were 18 inches (457 mm) wide and were painted chordwise on the upper and lower surfaces of both wings and around the fuselage. The outer edge of the mainplane bands was 6 inches (152 mm) inboard of the RAF roundel and the rear edge of the fuselage bands was 18 inches (457 mm) forward of the tailplane.
