What were the different guns used by American officers in WW2?
I misread your question, and answered for all soldiers.Post has some good info I hope you like. Most officers who carried long guns carried the M-1 Carbine. A lightweight 15 shot semi auto in the .30 carbine caliber. I am sure some of the infantry lieutenants carried the larger Garrand or Thompson sub machine gun. When the war started, the most common rifle was the 1903 Springfield bolt action, 30-06 caliber. As the war progressed, it was replaced by the M1 Garrand, a semi auto rifle also in 30-06. The M1 carbine, a smaller rifle with a less powerful round was carried by many troops also. The BAR was a select fire (full auto- or semi auto) 30-06 that was very popular but rather heavy. The other full auto weapons were in the Thompson sub-machine gun and one that was called the grease gun by the troops.
