What were The civil rights issues in 19th century (racial) and how did black leaders approach them?
In one sense, you have answered your own question. The main issue regarding Civil Rights in the 1800’s was racism – with the abolition of slavery,in the USA, only occuring in 1865, (slavery had become illegal in Britain in 1807). Mr Washington took the approach that change would be slow in coming. He saw that it was vital to improve the education of young black people in order for their lives to improve in the future, but he did not want radical reform in case the white population were alienated in the process. MrDubois wanted immediate affirmative action to improve education, and all other aspects of life for black citizens. It’s a shame that the two gentlemen could not agree; they probably could have achieved so much more if they had worked in harmony with one another. Have a look at the Wikipedia site which has some information on both gentlemen – and some useful links.
