Second Punic War: The Carthaginian general Hannibal attacked Saguntum, a Spanish city allied to Rome, thus precipitating war. Third Punic War: War in North Africa between Carthage and Numidian allies of Rome was used as a pretext by Rome to finally destroy Carthage. In a wider sense, the Punic Wars were caused by rivalry between Rome and Carthage for control of colonies and trade routes in the Mediterranean.
