What were the causes and effects of revolt of 1857 in delhi?
The revolt in Delhi was part of a general uprising in India later known as The Indian Mutiny. Religious, social, political, economic and military reasons lay behind the mutiny. The immediate cause is said to have been the handing out of beef and pigs-fat cartridges to the native soldiers, or Seepoys, of the British Army. The Seepoy segment consisted mainly of Hindu and Muslim soldier, thus the act constituted anathema to both. The mutineers wished to reeinstate the defunct Mughal Empire and its ageing emperor in Delhi. However, in the Siege of Delhi the British routed the mutineers.
