What were the battles the canadians fought in the battle of Passchendaele?
The Battle of Messines was a battle close to the town of Messines on the 7th of June, 1917. During 1916, engineers from all over the British Empire had been digging tunnels under a ridge called the Ypres Salient (which was a strong defensive position occupied by the German army). These tunnels under the ridge were filled with explosives and detonated. With the ridge destroyed, troops from the Second British Army and divisions from Australia and New Zealand advanced on German lines and captured thousands of prisoners (the report says that the Germans surrendered “in droves”). Although they had helped in the construction of the tunnels, Canadian divisions didn’t take part in the actual assault. The Battle of Poelcappelle was a “battle within a battle” that took place during the Third Battle of Ypres. The Battle(s) of Passchendale (I think there were two or three?) were various Allied offensives against the Ypres Salient. I believe four Canadian Divisions were present at the Battle of Pas
