While they did not find it surprising that children from poorer families read less, received less encouragement to read from their parents, and were less likely to enjoy reading, the authors stressed the importance of developing all childrens’ enjoyment of reading as this is a key factor in developing literacy skills. Failure to sufficiently develop literacy skills in turn limits a child’s ability to access the curriculum.
