What were some major conflicts during the Tang & Song dynasty?
The Tang Dyvasty was primarily a period of calm and great progress in the arts and culture. As for conflicts, there was the brief reign of Wu Zetian, who seized the throne and became the first and only Chinese empress regnant (need I add that she was utterly ruthless?). Then there was the An Lushan Rebellion, which led to the rise of regional warlords and the decline of central government (an expanding population also led to the weakening of central authority). The Song dynasty was originally in the North but lost control to the JIn Dynasty. The Southern Song continued to flourish and with the development of gunpowder was able to repel the Jin and the MOngols. Eventually, however, Kublai Khan was able to conquer the Song and established the YUan Dynasty over a unified China.
