One of the best outdoors clothes of the past and today were made out of wool. It was readily available and it kept you warm even when wet. The outer clothes were usually made from animal skins and in the winter they wore skins that had the fur attached. The fur acted as an insulator and it helped shed the rain. They dressed in layers just as we are told to do today because layers trap air and can be removed one at a time as needed. Or added as needed. When you see the old wetern movies and they had fringe hanging off the sleeves and pants legs that also served a purpose. It was not for decoration. The fringe let water drip away from the body and it helped dry the clothes because it acted as a wick and drew the water out of the garment.
