What were canopic jars used for during a mummification process?
Canopic jars were used to store the internal organs (the liver, lungs, intestines, and stomach. The heart was placed back in the body because Egyptians believed that after death, the heart would be weighed against the feather of truth. If the heart was heavier than the feather it would be thrown to a crocodile to be eaten. The canopic jars were usually decorated with images of Anubis (Jackal god of mummification) or the sons of Horus-Re (Hapy, Imset, Duamutef, and Quebesenuf). Canopic jars were placed with the mummy after the embalming process was complete.
