What were British womens roles at home and at work during World War 2?
As many men were being deployed as soldiers women had to do the jobs that men mainly did. Some did factory work, agricultural work. Most teachers were women so they were evacuated from major cities with the school pupils, though women were teachers before the war. There was also voluntary organisations for women to join- the Women’s Voluntary Service. All military services were open to women but the women were rarely allowed to fight. Women were also secret agents. Entertainment was important during the war and women like Vera Lynn were great entertainers. When the war ended the returning soldiers wanted society and life to go back to the way it was before the war, before their lifes got turned upside down.
