I agree with Stuart. I would also like to add that, in 1911, Ernest Rutherford conducted an experiment similar to what Stuart describes for crystals. Rutherford shot alpha particles at a thin sheet of gold and observed the final positions of those particles. He noted three important things: to begin with, most of the alpha particles went straight through (or nearly straight through) the gold foil. This means the atom is mostly empty space. Second, he noted that some alpha particles were almost completely reflected or were scattered at wide angles. This means that there was some massive central object (the nucleus) which barely moved when the alpha particles hit it. And third, he inferred from some of the very small scattering angles that there was a thin cloud of electrons surrounding the nucleus which very slightly influenced the path of the alpha particles.
