A 3D (“three-dimensional”) film is a motion picture that creates the optical illusion of depth perception. The brainchild of stereoscopic photography, 3D films employ a special video camera to record images as seen from two perspectives or in the case of animation, computers are used to create the two perspectives. These two perspectives give the film depth, as if the scenes were being viewed by a person’s two eyes. Special projectors and eyewear help create the illusion as well. 3D films are not limited to feature film theatrical releases; television broadcasts and direct-to-video films have also used similar methods.
