What was Watergate? Who suffered because of it?
Watergate was the break-in to get Democratic campaign information during the 1972 campaign. It was done without President Nixon’s knowledge but he tried to cover it up afterwards so that it would not reflect on him or his staff. Most, if not all, of the people who made the break-in (known as the “plumbers”) went to jail. President Nixon resigned as he was about to be impeached. They all suffered but so did the country. The trauma of what President Ford later called “our national nightmare” of the accusations, hearings, evidence and other manouvers involving a sitting president caused the President to become weak and focused the country on the daily events involving the President which became a pseudo-soap opera. So in fact everyone in the country also sufferred.
