What was the very first religion and what did they believe ?

The first know religion were the sun worshippers. To this day it is still the most sensible religion because, of course, without the sun we would not be here. However, it was superceded by other ‘more advanced’ religions like christianity and Islam, which, of course, are not really religions at all as they are all basically political causes. Christianity, for instance, was created by ‘Saint’ Paul in the 1st century as a means of destroying the Roman Empire. However, all religions have one thing in common. They are just primitive, superstitious garbage. Science is the truth and science is the light. Try reading Richard Dawkins’ excellent book The God Delusion. It is to the 21st century what the bible was to the dark ages!

.It is impossible for History to provide conclusive evidence of the earliest belief systems, but here are some possibilities. Animism – perhaps ` holy` mountains, rivers and natural features, giving rise to sacred sites, similar to Australian and American native beliefs. Sun worship – without the sun all life dies, hence there are very many Sun cults, often connected with astrological movements of stars, Moon, solstices, and the related food growing/planting/harvesting cycle of primitive agriculture. The sun is the supreme celestial object considered by the ancients in a vast variety of disparate possible belief systems. See Incas, Egyptians, Aztecs, and Druidic beliefs. Today Christianity displays many Sun cult icons, folk may not wish to believe it, but the` light of the world`, the `Sun` of God in heaven, and many other expressions, were voiced by Pagans a long, long time ago !

No one actually knows what the first religion was but previous answers are logical in the view that we worshipped Nature, be it the Sun or the ‘bringer of fertility’ for the land and ourselves so that we could eat well and reproduce. We were (quite rightly) wrapped up in our basic survival but were also influenced by superstition, fear of natural (and misunderstood) phenomena such as earthquakes and volcanoes which caused us to create beliefs about their existence and sometimes believed that they had human-like pleasures and dislikes. That superstition evolved into complex deity belief systems and beliefs in gods which were basically human projections on the unknown. knowledge through science and evolution of ideas brings us to the present day beliefs. Much ‘religion’ is still just a stones throw from superstition and speculation with a desire to appease a cruel god.
