What was the value of the British pound around the 1800s compared to its value today?
The imperial British pound had 240 pennies in it. This was broken down into 480 half pennies and 960 farthings. Sometimes a guinea was used. This had 252 pennies in it, 504 half pennies, or 1008 farthings. Also, the pound was divided into shilling coins, then worth 12 pence, two shilling coins, called two bob, and the pound had twenty shillings. A guinea had 21 shillings in it.
