What was the target population for the survey?
To define the field of hospital medicine, SHM focused on contacting HMGs with named group leaders. The source data for the survey sample was the 2007 SHM administrative database of registered members. This database contains information on approximately 2,000 HMGs representing almost 7,000 hospitalist members of SHM. To be included in the survey, the survey required that the database have a regular mailing address for the group leader, resulting in a target population of approximately 1,800 HMG leaders.
