What was the Stolen Generation of Australian Aborigines?
The Stolen Generation involved taking Aborigines away from their native families and denying to them that they were in fact Aborigines at all. It was done (by some though not all) as a way to exterminate the Aborigine culture. Some felt that they were doing it in the best interest of the kids. Maybe in some cases they were right. It was applied far too widely. There are heaps of articles about it. A fairly recent film also covered it. Rabbit Proof Fence it was called. I liked the movie in that it showed the impact on a small family that tried to get back home after being taken away. Rudd was right to apologize for it even though he nor anyone in Parliament had anything to do with it at all.
