What was the single season record for inside the park home runs in modern day baseball??
Back in the deadball era, most homers were probably inside the park. As far as is known (details from the 19th century are often sketchy) the single-season record is 12. ‘Wahoo’ Sam Crawford, wonderful old Hall of Fame outfielder with the Tigers and Reds around the turn of the century. Rarely hear about him these days, still overshadowed by the likes of Cobb and Speaker, but he was one of the great deadball sluggers. Probably born a few decades too early, he would’ve really thrived in the longball game of the 30s…a lot of those homers (and plenty more) would have gone out of the park in the high-scoring days of Ruth/Gehrig.
