What Was The Significance Of The Ceremonial Peace Pipe Among The Plains Indians?
The name itself describes the significance; the ceremonial peace pipe was used by the Native Americans as a token object of peace. The pipe is primarily a smoking pipe and also known with the name of calumet or medicine pipe. Commonly the bowl used in the pipe is made of red pipestone or catlinite which is a fine-grained stone that can be worked easily. The stone can be found in Coteau des Prairies that is situated in the western part of the Big Stone Lake in South Dakota. The pipe was used to smoke tobacco that was considered as among the most sacred thing among the Indian tribes. Even some tobacco was being sprinkled on the ground as an offering after saying a prayer to all the four directions and also the sky.
