What was the significance of changing the name from Troy State University to Troy University?
Hawkins: You have few opportunities in life to reinvent a university and that’s what we are engaged in here. There have been several initiatives over the years that encouraged us to look at the name of institution, but we have felt until our mission changed a name change would be cosmetic. This one great university that allows us to go to one curriculum so a student can begin with us anywhere in the world like Malaysia and finish in Montgomery or Dothan or Troy with one brand label. We plan to be one great university by Aug. 1. We believe our best days are ahead because what that will allow us to do is to serve students worldwide. We no longer are a regional university. Our presence goes way beyond Alabama. CABJ: How did the name change come about? Hawkins: We had been engaged in a marketing study and a review of our grand promise.
