What was the result of cultural contact for the Beothuk Indians of Newfoundland?
Actually the Beothuk people had very little contact with explorers or settlers, which is why we don’t know as much about their culture as we do about other First nations groups. None of the above really explain their story. The Beothuks didn’t really trade with fishermen. The migratory fishery meant the Europeans came in the spring with all their own supplies and left before winter. When the fishermen abandond their stations Beothuks were able to collect iron and left overs and fashion them into tools they needed. This did cause some tension between the groups. The settlement by Europeans along the coast meant the Beothuks moved further inland where there wasn’t the same food sources and they couldn’t follow their traditional migratoy routes. in the past there were papers and books written about mass slaughter and bountys on the heads of Beothuks. Research has shown much of this writing wasn’t an acruate portrayal of what actually took place.
