What was the relationship like between Charles Dodgson and Alice Liddell?
First yes he took photographs of young girls – no touching, no molesting just photographs. The girls parents knew this and allowed it – different days different culture. Second he was a “confirmed batchelor” – recognised type of that culture – didn’t marry didn’t expect to marry. He was good friends with the Liddell family (and a few rumours then emerge about his relationship to Mrs Liddell), he appears to have been friends with all of the children of the family – outings, picnics, story telling. Why the friendship collapsed no-one knows. He had many other young female friends – maybe he just felt comfortable with girls. Sad extra – his papers were lost or destroyed so we can never know.
