In those days, the U.S. was all about stopping the spread of communism. North and South Vietnam had been divided in to communist and non-communist countries (North and South respectively), and the North was seen by the U.S. as the aggressor.. invading the South to spread communism. So the U.S. moved to assist the government of the South … initially supplying weapons and advisors, but eventually taking over the primary military role. The war ended because of intense resistance within the U.S. to continuing it. Richard Nixon pulled the troops out, and the North overran the South quickly. The last U.S. troops left in 1975. Radical Islam has now replaced communism in our patheon of devils to fight, but the basic mentality hasn’t changed… nothing truly substantive was learned in the Vietnam war, as evidenced by our current venture in Iraq.
