What was the reason for the rise in influence of Syria?
The American left had a lot to do with it. During the term of President Bush, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Arlen Specter and other left of center players visited him in Damascus. This fawning over a very leftist dictator when he was still politically weak, after presumably ordering the assassination of Hariri, is shameful.
