What was the reason for secession in the United States?
I have long thought the BEST place to go for the answer to this question is to what those who seceded provided as their reasons for doing so — NOT to what they said years later (after the war), but to what they said BEFORE and especially DURING the process of secession. Fortunately for us–though oddly ignored by many — four of the first seven states (of the Deep South) to secede approved, at the time of their secession formal “Declarations of Causes” At the following link you can read the full text of all of these: http://members.aol.com/jfepperson/reason… _________ I’ve read through all of them, but you don’t have to look very far to find that when they come to the point of citing the “grievances” justifying their seceding, they really only list ONE – slavery. For example: South Carolina spends the first half of the document laying out a theory on the nature of the national federation that would ALLOW for s
