What was the reason for Ian Smiths declaration of independence for Southern Rhodesia in 1965?
Regardless of what you think, the British government was against independence for Southern Rhodesia as long as the government stuck to its white supremacy ideas. There were ultimatums sent to Ian Smith which clearly stated that independence would not be granted to Southern Rhodesia until these conditions were fulfilled. That is why Ian Smith announced UDI (Unilateral Declaration of Independence) on 11th. November 1965.
