What was the rationale for conducting the DM Trial?
Observational data, supported by animal studies, suggested that a low-fat diet might reduce the risk of breast and colorectal cancers. Effects on heart disease were also suggested, particularly through reductions in saturated fat intake. In the WHI, reductions in saturated fat were presumed to go along with reduction in total fat, as had occurred in the Womens Health Trial, a pilot study of the WHI DM Trial.
